NEW DELHI: Delhi finished the first leg of this season’s Ranji Trophy with three points from an insipid draw against Services at the Air Force ground in Palam on Thursday. Services set them an improbable target of 320 from 56 overs on the last day after their captain Rajat Paliwal scored 116, his second century of the match. For a brief while it appeared Delhi were going after the target. After Priyansh Arya and Ayush Badoni fell for 15 and 17 respectively, everything seemed a formality even as Yash Dhull eased to an unbeaten 104 off 104 balls as Delhi’s Ranji campaign remained in tatters with seven points from four matches.Delhi’s red-ball cricket has been in a freefall for a while. Coach Vijay Dahiya spared no words to express his disappointment. Both of Delhi’s home matches finished in draws despite taking the early advantage. “When you want to win a game of a day’s cricket, you have to dictate terms. We didn’t dictate any session, and are disappointed because we wanted maximum out of this game to stay alive,” he said.Dahiya said the players need to be accountable. “The system is backing you. This year, there has been no wholesome changes despite a defeat. You have enough time if you are professional enough. That is one thing that is needed is taking accountability as an individual,” he said. The Delhi team has failed to seize the initiative. The bowlers failed to bowl out opponents after the batters put up big scores. In Bengal, the fielders dropped catches.
What should Delhi focus on most to improve their performance in the Ranji Trophy?
