An aeroplane toilet is a small shared space used by several passengers during a flight. Unlike a regular bathroom, it has limited space, high passenger turnover and specific safety requirements. Certain habits can create hygiene problems or make things difficult for the cabin crew. Here are five things passengers should avoid doing inside an aircraft toilet.

1. Flush the toilet while still seated

Aircraft toilets use a powerful vacuum-based flushing system. The sudden noise can be startling, and passengers should follow the instructions displayed in the lavatory. It is best to stand up, close the toilet lid if one is provided and then flush. Never put your face or hands near the flushing mechanism.

2. Throw tissues and sanitary products into the toilet

Aircraft toilets have specialised waste systems that are not designed to handle everything. Flushing sanitary pads, tampons, wet wipes or other bulky materials can cause blockages. Use the designated waste bin for these items and only flush toilet paper.

3. Ignore the seat and surrounding surfaces

Small bathrooms are used by multiple passengers, so it is important to maintain basic hygiene. Avoid leaving water, soap or other mess on the seat and surrounding surfaces. If something spills, clean it up using the available supplies or inform the cabin crew if necessary.

4. Use the toilet when the seatbelt sign is on

Turbulence can happen unexpectedly, and standing inside a small aircraft toilet during rough conditions can be dangerous. Always follow the seatbelt sign and cabin crew instructions. If the sign switches on while you are inside, finish safely and return to your seat as soon as possible, following crew directions.

5. Smoke or vape inside the toilet

Smoking and vaping are prohibited inside commercial aircraft, including their toilets. Aircraft lavatories are equipped with smoke detectors, and tampering with these devices is a serious safety violation. Even a small smoking-related incident can trigger an emergency response and disrupt the flight.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
