Black Bear breaks into California library and goes straight for the honey on Winnie-the-Pooh’s 100th birthday |
A black bear walked into a California library before opening hours, raided the staff snack stash and helped itself to honey. The timing made the unusual visit even funnier: it happened on the 100th anniversary of Winnie-the-Pooh.If anyone needed a reminder of how much bears love honey, a library in California just got one. On October 14, a black bear wandered into the Mammoth Lakes Library and made itself at home, helping itself to snacks before taking a look around the building. And the timing couldn’t have been more fitting. The unexpected visitor showed up on the very day Winnie-the-Pooh celebrated 100 years since his first appearance in print.
Bear walks into library and raids the snack stash
Surveillance footage shared by Mono County Free Libraries shows the bear entering the Mammoth Lakes branch at around 6 am, several hours before the library was due to open to the public at 10 am.Rather than making a quick exit, the animal headed straight for the staff snack supply. Its haul reportedly included peanut butter, peach pups, cookies and, of course, a jar of honey. The bear then appeared to take its time exploring the library. According to the library’s account of the incident, it wandered around the building, checked out the new releases and even inspected the reference desk before eventually heading back outside. It sounds almost like a regular library visit, except this particular reader had no library card, wasn’t planning to borrow a book and apparently had very specific ideas about the refreshments.
Library has a message for its unexpected visitor
Mono County Free Libraries shared the footage with a playful nod to the famous fictional bear, pointing out that the real-life visitor had turned up on Winnie-the-Pooh’s centenary and gone straight for the honey. The library’s director, Josef Bopp, also had a message for the furry intruder. While welcoming enthusiastic library visitors, Bopp reminded them that snacks weren’t part of the library’s circulating collection. The tongue-in-cheek remark was a fitting response to a break-in that had apparently turned into a rather unusual morning outing.Thankfully, the bear’s visit was described as a raid on the snack supply followed by a tour of the premises. The footage and the library’s account quickly caught people’s attention, largely because of the coincidence surrounding the date.
Winnie-the-Pooh turns 100
Winnie-the-Pooh first appeared in the book by British author A. A. Milne, published on October 14, 1926. The much-loved character, known for his fondness for honey and his simple outlook on life, has remained a favourite with generations of readers. The bear in California may not have been looking for a storybook adventure, but its choice of snack couldn’t have been more appropriate.A black bear breaking into a library is unusual enough. One showing up on the anniversary of a fictional bear famous for eating honey feels like a coincidence straight out of a children’s story. And while Winnie-the-Pooh would probably have been delighted by the discovery of a fresh jar of honey, the library might prefer that its next visitor leaves the snacks alone. For now, this real-life bear has managed to steal a little of the spotlight on a day that already belonged to one of literature’s most beloved characters.
