PATNA: Barely days after a disturbing video of the alleged public harassment of a minor girl in Jamui triggered widespread outrage and police action, another purported incident of a woman being harassed in public has surfaced in Bihar—this time in Samastipur. A video showing a young woman allegedly being surrounded and harassed by a group of youths near an embankment in Jagat Singhpur has gone viral on social media.The Samastipur incident reportedly occurred after the woman and a male acquaintance stopped near the embankment to take photographs. According to preliminary information, some youths present in the area allegedly surrounded the woman and began harassing her. The incident was apparently recorded by someone present at the spot, and the footage was subsequently circulated across social media platforms. However, acting swiftly, the police arrested all four accused after the video came to their notice.The video appears to show the woman standing on the road while several youths surround her. One youth is allegedly seen repeatedly holding her hand despite her attempts to get away, while another appears to move towards her after she protests.The woman can be heard asking the youths to let her go. At one point, she reportedly says that she will call her brother, following which the youths respond, “Okay, call him.” The footage continues to show the youths around her before ending with one of them standing near a motorcycle.Samastipur SP Arvind Pratap Singh said that on the evening of Sept 23, during social media monitoring, it came to notice that a video was spreading rapidly on various social media platforms in which 3-4 persons were seen indulging in indecent behaviour with a girl.“Considering the sensitivity of the matter, the video was immediately technically verified. On the basis of verification, the place of occurrence was identified as the road near the dam situated in village Jagtasinghpur under Karpuri Gram Police Station area,” Singh said.He further stated that the incident is said to be about a week old. The victim seen in the video prima facie appears to be a minor. As the victim could not be immediately identified and keeping in view the sensitivity of the case, the police acted swiftly on the basis of the statement of the police officer and registered a case at Karpuri Gram Police Station under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), POCSO Act and IT Act.Acting promptly, Samastipur Police identified all the accused involved in the case and arrested all four within six hours of receiving the information. Further legal action is being taken, the SP said.The victim prima facie appears to be a minor. Therefore, Samastipur Police has appealed to media persons and social media users not to share any post or content on social media that reveals the identity of the victim or causes mental and social harm to her. The police reminded that sharing such posts/content on social media comes under the category of cognizable offence.The development comes just days after the Jamui case, where a Class 10 girl and a male classmate were allegedly stopped and harassed by a group of youths while returning from the Marwa Pahad area on September 19. Videos of that incident circulated widely online, following which police registered a case and launched a probe. Several accused have since been arrested.
