Deuba is the biggest political leader to feel the heat of the Gen Z movement in September, when he was ousted from the election fray.Deuba was a 5-time prime minister and represented Dadeldhura from 1991. Dadeldhura district is on the other side of Champawat district of Uttarakhand and has cultural and historical relations with Champawat.Deuba was Congress President until December, but the other group led by Gagan Thapa called a special convention and removed Deuba from the President post. Later, the Nepal Election Commission recognised the Thapa group as the real Congress. Deuba wanted to contest the election one more time, but Thapa strongly told him to retire from electoral politics, and Deuba said he was not contesting. Notably, Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, Aarju Rana, were physically assaulted by Gen Z workers.Political observers said that the Gen Z movement created new challenges for old political leadership, and youth wanted a new generation in politics. This election decided who would take the baton of the Deuba legacy, he added. When Deuba was contesting, the result was certain, but without Deuba the election contest is very uncertain and interesting, Ojha said.There are 13 candidates in competition, and the main fight is among the Nepali Congress, Nepal Communist Party (UML), Nepal Communist Party, and Rastriya Swatantra Party.
