Stray dogs intervened to save a mentally ill woman from an alleged assault

COIMBATORE: Stray dogs saved a mentally ill woman from a sexual assault attempt by a drunk 17-year-old boy on the outskirts of Coimbatore in the early hours of Thursday.The incident occurred near NGGO Colony in Thudiyalur around 2am. Police, who were checking CCTV footage to investigate a complaint regarding an arson attempt on a petty shop in the area, stumbled upon the visuals of the teenager’s attempt to sexually assault the woman.According to police sources, the woman was sitting before her relative’s house near a railway overbridge when the minor boy approached her under the influence of alcohol.The CCTV footage showed two stray dogs barking persistently at the suspect as he approached the victim. When the suspect tried to overpower and assault the woman, she raised an alarm. Immediately, one of the dogs came to her rescue and bit him on his legs a few times. Overwhelmed by the dog attack, the suspect fled the scene. The dog chased him away.Based on the visual evidence from the footage, the Thudiyalur police registered a case and arrested the boy on Friday. He was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and lodged in an observation home in the city.A police officer said the boy from Ganesh Nagar was addicted to alcohol and was doing notorious activities under the influence of liquor.
