She thought it was rats
Alltop, 30, had a personal connection to the property long before she became its owner. Growing up nearby, she remembered visiting the house when she was a child, when an ice-cream stand operated on the property. When the farmhouse eventually came up for sale, its age did not put her off. She wanted the place partly because of the memories attached to it.The house itself still carried plenty of evidence of its past. Alltop and her husband had modernised parts of it but deliberately kept many original features, including light fixtures more than 100 years old. There were two porches, a large basement and, intriguingly, a secret staircase.Then came the noises.With her husband at work, Alltop thought she could hear what sounded like rats in the basement. Instead of ignoring them, she grabbed her camera and went downstairs to investigate. What she recorded was a large wooden door shaking with no obvious explanation. Near the end of the footage, the lock appeared to jiggle too.That was enough to send her running back upstairs.
The internet saw something even stranger
Alltop had not initially intended to create a viral ghost story. She had filmed the incident simply because she wanted to capture the sounds and figure out what was causing them.She later posted the footage on TikTok almost casually.It exploded.According to PEOPLE, the video accumulated more than 45 million views, with viewers dissecting the footage and offering their own explanations. Some immediately suggested that the farmhouse was haunted, while others focused on possible physical causes behind the movement.The reaction became even more unsettling when viewers pointed out something Alltop herself had initially missed: in a follow-up video, another door appeared to move on its own.She admitted that seeing it pointed out by strangers frightened her.But she has not abandoned the house.
The house has a history of its own
Perhaps the creepiest part of the story isn’t the basement door. It’s what the house was before Alltop ever owned it.She told PEOPLE that the property had once been a schoolhouse, with children attending classes there during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. That detail gives the building a history stretching far beyond the couple’s recent move.Timber expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. Old doors can swell in damp weather, frames can shift, pipes and heating systems can produce unfamiliar noises, and air pressure can cause doors to move. A house that has survived for two centuries will naturally make sounds that are unfamiliar to someone accustomed to newer construction.And Alltop herself appears to understand that distinction better than the people watching the viral footage.“Everything has an explanation; sometimes we just don’t know it yet,” she told PEOPLE.
She still loves the house
Despite the frightening episode, Alltop says she feels safe there. Nothing harmful has happened to her, and she has come to regard the strange noises and moving doors as part of living in an old property.That may be the most interesting twist in the story.The internet turned the basement into a horror-movie setting. Viewers imagined ghosts and hidden histories. Alltop, meanwhile, still sees the place as the childhood landmark she was fascinated by years ago, a home with old porches, original fixtures, a secret staircase and a past that she wants to preserve.The farmhouse may creak, doors may move and the basement may occasionally make noises no one can immediately explain. But after 200 years, perhaps that is exactly what makes an old house feel alive.
