Jharkhand villages told to segregate waste into four categories at source | Ranchi News
Jamshedpur: Panchayat representatives in West Singhbhum were asked on Thursday to ensure that waste is segregated at source into four categories before collection.The instruction was issued at a one-day workshop on the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, held at the Chaibasa block auditorium. Mukhiyas, panchayat secretaries, block-level officials and sanitation workers from various panchayats attended the workshop.Officials asked panchayats to ensure that households and institutions separate waste into wet, dry, sanitary and special-care categories. They said segregation at source would make waste collection, processing and disposal more scientific and help reduce environmental pollution.“The success of solid waste management in rural areas will depend largely on what happens at the source. If waste is segregated properly at the household level, recycling and processing become much easier,” said Ghanshyam Shah, a resource person from IDF, a UNICEF partner organisation.Shah explained the key provisions of the 2026 rules through a presentation. Participants were also briefed about their responsibilities in waste collection, processing and safe disposal.The workshop also focused on bringing together the resources of the Panchayati Raj system, Viksit Bharat G-RAM-G and the Swachh Bharat Mission instead of implementing waste-management programmes separately.Panchayat representatives were asked to spread awareness among households and encourage community participation. Officials said the main challenge was to turn waste segregation and disposal into a regular practice in villages.
