Matthew Perry and Julia Roberts had a whirlwind romance, but he ended it after just two months

Matthew Perry and Julia Roberts seemed like the kind of Hollywood pairing that could only happen in a movie. One was already a beloved sitcom star, the other was one of the biggest actresses in the world. Yet for a brief moment in the mid-1990s, the two really were together.

Their relationship began in an unusual way – with a fax machine.

By the time Julia Roberts agreed to appear on Friends, she and Perry had already developed a connection. Roberts was interested in making a guest appearance on the sitcom, but reportedly wanted to be part of Chandler Bing’s storyline.

Perry, encouraged by Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman, decided to make his move. He sent Roberts three dozen roses along with a clever note. That gesture turned into something neither of them probably expected.

The pair began exchanging faxes, and lots of them. Perry later recalled that they would send messages back and forth several times a day. Before long, those faxes became long phone conversations, and the relationship moved from playful correspondence to something much more personal.
