Sugar And Cancer Risk: Less sugar in the first 1,000 days may change health decades later, study finds lower cancer risk and slower ageing
A little sweetness in childhood can become a lifelong taste. A new study suggests that this may matter for more than food preferences.Published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on August 4, 2026, the study examined 64,761 UK Biobank participants born between 1951 and 1956. Researchers used Britain’s sudden end of sugar rationing in September 1953 as a natural experiment.People whose first 1,000 days were largely spent under rationing had lower rates of several cancers later in life. The strongest association was seen for liver and intrahepatic bile duct cancers, followed by rectal, lung, prostate and breast cancers.This was not a trial in which babies were deliberately assigned to a sugar-free diet. The historical setting allowed researchers to study a real-world difference in early sugar exposure.
The first 1,000 days may leave a long shadow
The first 1,000 days, counted from conception to a child’s second birthday, are a sensitive period for growth and metabolic development.Dr Palleti Siva Karthik Reddy, MBBS, MD, FAIG, Consultant Physician at Elite Care Clinic, explained that early nutrition can influence how the body develops and responds to food later.“The first 1,000 days, from conception through the first two years of life, are an important period for metabolic and developmental programming,” he said.
What did sugar restriction actually change?
One interesting finding was not inside a tumour or a single metabolic pathway. It was in eating behaviour.People exposed to rationing consumed less sugar even around five decades later. They also reported smaller quantities of food and more diverse diets.That raises an intriguing possibility. Early exposure may help shape taste preferences, making very sweet foods feel less necessary later.The researchers also found longer leukocyte telomeres in the rationed group. Telomeres are protective structures at chromosome ends that generally shorten with cell division and ageing. The researchers estimated this difference corresponded to about 2.2 fewer years of biological ageing.That does not mean sugar restriction literally turns back the body’s age by two years. It is a biological marker, not a birthday clock.
Does this mean sugar causes cancer?
The study provides stronger evidence than a simple observational comparison because the researchers exploited a historical change in rationing. That natural experiment strengthens the argument for a causal relationship.Still, it cannot establish that sugar alone caused every difference. People living through rationing experienced a broader dietary environment, not just lower sugar intake.The study also suggests possible biological pathways involving metabolism, chronic inflammation and immune activity. But these mechanisms should not be presented as proof that eating sugar directly causes a particular cancer.This distinction matters. A headline saying “sugar causes cancer” would go beyond what the research actually established.
For children, the target is added sugar, not fruit
Parents do not need to fear the natural sugar found in whole fruit or milk.The bigger concern is added or free sugar in sweets, desserts, sugary drinks and other highly processed foods. WHO recommends keeping free sugars below 10% of daily energy intake and suggests going below 5% for additional benefit.For young children, the advice is even clearer. WHO says sugars should not be added to complementary foods, while the CDC advises that children under 24 months should not consume added sugars.
The goal is a low-sugar habit, not a fearful childhood
Dr Reddy cautioned against turning the findings into an extreme rule.“The key message from this research is therefore not that sugar is toxic or that children need an absolutely sugar-free diet,” he said. “It is that the amount and type of sugar children are exposed to early in life may matter much more than we previously appreciated.”That may be the most useful takeaway for families.A child does not need a childhood built around forbidden foods. What matters more is making less-sweet foods normal from the beginning.A bowl of fruit does not need to compete with a dessert every day. Plain curd does not need sugar to become acceptable. Water can remain the everyday drink.The study’s most fascinating message is therefore not simply “eat less sugar”.
