Why Supreme Court refused to replace hanging with lethal injection

The Supreme Court has dismissed a public interest litigation challenging hanging as the sole method of executing death sentences in civilian cases. It held that hanging remains constitutionally valid and does not violate the right to life and dignity under Article 21.
A two-judge bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said there was no compelling scientific or empirical evidence to reconsider a precedent that has stood for more than four decades. The petition concerned the method of execution, not the constitutional validity of the death penalty itself.
