Class X student killed, another injured as school’s dilapidated, rain-soaked compound wall collapses in Andhra Pradesh’s Manyam district

Visakhapatnam: A Class X student died and another was injured when the dilapidated compound wall of a govt high school collapsed at Salur in Parvathipuram Manyam district on Monday.The incident triggered protests by the parents, relatives and friends of the deceased, T Aruna Teja, who demanded stringent action against those responsible. The injured student, Yakub, is said to be out of danger.According to locals, the school’s compound wall had been in a dilapidated condition for a long time, and the recent rain further weakened it. After having lunch on the school premises, Teja, who was from Relliveedhi in Salur, Yakub, and a few other students went near the compound wall to attend nature’s call.When Teja and Yakub tried to climb the wall to sit on it, the structure suddenly collapsed, trapping them. Teja sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the nearest govt hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment. Yakub was also grievously injured but is said to be out of danger.Teja’s parents, Suman and Aswini, held the school management responsible for their son’s death. They, along with relatives and friends, staged a protest outside the school with the boy’s body, demanding stringent action against the staff. Police intervened and pacified the protesters.The protesters further alleged that more than 230 students study at the school, which has only one toilet. They questioned why the authorities had failed to fix the dilapidated compound wall despite being aware of its condition for so long.Expressing concern over the incident, tribal welfare minister Gummadi Sandhya Rani brought the matter to the notice of HRD and IT minister Nara Lokesh. The AP govt has announced an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh for Teja’s family. Sandhya Rani said a detailed inquiry will be conducted into the incident. Salur police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
