HC directs Virudhunagar collector, SP to submit suggestions on regulating fireworks units

Madurai: Madras high court on Monday directed the Virudhunagar district collector and superintendent of police to submit their suggestions to the district legal services authority (DLSA) chairperson on regulating the functioning of fireworks units to prevent accidents in the units in Virudhunagar district.Virudhunagar principal district judge, who is chairperson of DLSA, sent a communication stating that pursuant to an earlier direction issued by the court, a meeting was convened on August 6. While all the other officials who took part in the meeting have given their remarks/suggestions, the collector and SP are yet to give their suggestions.Taking into account the submissions, a division bench of Justice C V Karthikeyan and Justice R Sakthivel directed the collector and SP to submit their suggestions to the DLSA chairperson to enable him to submit a report before the court.During the previous hearing, the court called upon the chairperson of DLSA, Virudhunagar to convene a meeting with secretary to home department, secretary to labour welfare and skill development department, director of industrial safety and health, and other stakeholders during the first week of August.The court was hearing a batch of petitions including a suo motu proceedings initiated in 2014. The petitions have been filed seeking a direction to prevent accidents in fireworks units and seeking to provide compensation to the family members of the workers killed in such accidents.
