SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday uncovered an alleged plot by a 51-year-old government employee to frame the husband of a woman with whom he had allegedly been in a relationship before her marriage by sending a narcotics-laced courier to him.According to police, the alleged plan was to have the husband arrested in a narcotics case and keep him out of circulation, potentially clearing the way for the accused to resume his relationship with the woman.The case came to light after Ganderbal police received information about a suspected drug consignment being sent through a courier service. Police intercepted the parcel, which had been shipped from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.According to police, a sniffer dog was deployed and the parcel was examined. It contained around 4kg of a powder-like substance which, on testing with rapid test kits, tested positive for cocaine and was said to be worth a huge amount on the international market. The four separate packets also contained about 80 grams of what police described as “pure charas” and strips of suspected psychotropic tablets.The consignment was addressed to a poultry farm owner, who told police during questioning that he was expecting poultry feed from a person who had contacted him through WhatsApp. He denied any knowledge of the drugs.Police then examined the poultry owner’s background and phone records, as well as those of his wife. The poultry farm owner had been married only a month earlier. Police said the woman’s phone records provided the first clue, leading them to Tariq Ahmad, 51, a J&K government employee. According to police, Ahmad had allegedly been in a relationship with the woman, 27.Police alleged that Ahmad had arranged the consignment through a friend in Uttar Pradesh, identified as Areeb. Police are investigating whether the woman was part of the alleged plot.Police are also examining Areeb’s movements and possible links to Saudi Arabia after finding phone records showing calls from Saudi Arabia to the poultry farm owner. They are also trying to establish how the drugs, said to be worth a huge amount on the international market, were procured and dispatched to Ganderbal district in Kashmir through a courier.According to the initial police investigation, the alleged motive was to keep the woman’s husband entangled in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, which could have created an opportunity for the former lover to resume his relationship with the woman.
