Bhubaneswar: Odisha police on Tuesday inked a five‑year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) to sharpen its personnel’s skills in cybercrime investigation, digital forensics and scientific policing.The pact, officials said, will serve as a long‑term framework for collaboration between the two institutions. “Crime is evolving at a rapid pace, and digital evidence now plays a decisive role in almost every case,” DGP Y B Khurania said while addressing trainees.“With cybercrimes such as mule accounts, online investment fraud, and digital arrest scams on the rise, forensic science has been placed at the very core of investigation under the new criminal laws. Proper seizure, preservation, and handling of electronic evidence must become a basic skill for every police officer,” Khurania said.Odisha has 34 cyber police stations covering all 30 districts. Of them 20 were set up in March this year. “Advanced training for the staff of the new police stations in the use of these tools is indispensable,” the DGP added. The MoU will extend beyond training to cover crime scene management, higher education, collaborative research, development of forensic infrastructure, and professional consultancy.As per plan, by Jan 2027, at least 480 officers and staff from cyber police stations will undergo training in 16 batches. Each batch of 30 participants—from constables to DSPs—will complete a six‑day module, including five days of classroom and laboratory sessions at NFSU’s temporary campus in Bhubaneswar and one day of practical training at the cyber complex here.“The true success of this programme lies not in collecting certificates but in acquiring the skills to gather proper digital evidence, conduct scientific investigations, and present admissible proof in court,” the DGP told the first batch. He advised participants to share their knowledge with colleagues in their districts after completing the training.
