SHIVAMOGGA: An 80-year-old retired engineer, identified as Kumaraswamy, tragically died after becoming trapped beneath an elevator car at the Dattatreya Swamy Temple in Vinayaka Nagar, Shivamogga.According to official complaint details lodged at the Jayanagar Police Station, the incident took place on Sunday morning. The deceased, Kumaraswamy, son of Nagabhat and a resident of Vinobha Nagar, Shivamogga, had left home around 7.30am after telling his wife, 75-year-old Lalitha Kumaraswamy, that he was going for a blood test at the Rotary Blood Bank in Vinayaka Nagar and would visit the Dattatreya Swamy Temple afterward. Around 9:00am, a family friend visited the victim’s house to inform his family that Kumaraswamy had fallen critically ill after getting trapped near the elevator doors at the temple. The tragedy took place when Kumaraswamy pressed the elevator button to travel to an upper floor. Believing the elevator had arrived, he opened the manual outer door and stepped into the shaft, police said. However, the lift car was situated on a floor above; as it descended, it struck Kumaraswamy and pinned him beneath it, causing severe trauma. Personnel from the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services quickly responded to the scene, rescued him from the shaft, and rushed him to McGann District Hospital. When his wife arrived at the hospital, attending doctors confirmed that he had succumbed to his injuries, police said.A written complaint was filed by Lalitha Kumaraswamy following whcih Jayanagar Police registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR).Law enforcement officials inspected the site to determine whether a mechanical failure in the manual door lock or a safety oversight allowed the door to open without the elevator car present. The body was processed for post-mortem examination before being released to the family for final rites as the police investigation continues, Shivamogga SP B Nikhil informed TOI.
