Trichy airport gets BCAS nod to start domestic cargo operations | Trichy News
Trichy: The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has granted security approval to commence domestic cargo operations at the Trichy International Airport, addressing a long-pending demand to maximise freight handling capacity at the airport. The approval is likely to encourage flight operators to launch new services to monetise domestic cargo demand. So far, only export cargo has been handled at Trichy airport.Confirming the development, Trichy airport management said the move will unlock faster cargo connectivity for industries and trade bodies in the region.Industries in textiles, engineering goods, sports kits manufacturing, spices and value-added food products are to benefit the most through domestic cargo. Without relying on road transport or other airports, industries can now reach manufacturing hubs and consumer markets within India.“The development will persuade operators to replace ATR aircraft with narrow body aircraft in the domestic sector so that more cargo can be handled and revenue generated,” H Ubaidullah, an aviation analyst, said.Presently Trichy is connected domestically with Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. “The approval reflects AAI’s commitment to strengthen regional connectivity and respond to the long-standing needs of the trade community,” G Gopalakrishnan, airport director, said.Meanwhile, Trichy airport has commenced the construction of RCC drain, box culvert and allied works in the area between the parallel taxi track (PTT-F) and the new apron. The Rs9.2 crore project, is aimed at strengthening the airport’s stormwater drainage system and improving water management in the airside operational area.
