Additional entries being built at Podanur railway station

COIMBATORE: Southern Railway has started work on setting up an additional entry at Podanur Junction railway station as part of developing the station into a second terminal in Coimbatore.According to sources, an entry on the Vellalore Road via Railway Colony is being built. A source said, “Work on the foot overbridge over the platforms had almost been completed. But it was further extended to provide an entry from the eastern side.T N Lakshmi Narayanan, a member of the Coimbatore South Development Federation, said, “Since the Vellalore bus stand project is also taking shape, this proposed entry will be very useful. The bus stand will house buses bound for southern districts and Kerala.

So, passengers need not go to the city to board the trains or even take the Podanur Road to reach the station. It has also been informed that a booking station might also come up for future growth of this station.In addition to the main entrance in Podanur, an additional entrance was created on the Nanjundapuram Road. However, this entrance continues to face objections due to its narrow approach road. Meanwhile, another entry gate has been planned a few metres down the Nanjundapuram Road, near the Noyyal Canal Road.N Subramanian, general secretary, Podanur Train Users Association said, “For a long time, we had continuously asked for additional entries to ease traffic surrounding once Podanur station becomes the second terminal. An entry on Vellalore Road is much needed because when additional train services operate from Podanur, passenger footfall will increase with people arriving from all directions.”
