Injured Himalayan griffon vulture rescued in Ajmer, referred to Jaipur | Jaipur News
Ajmer: A rare Himalayan griffon vulture (Gyps himalayensis) was found injured in a field on Ladpura Road in Ajmer Tuesday and was referred to Jaipur for treatment. This is the second sighting of the species in the city. A similar bird was rescued from Pisangan on Dec 5 last year, but it was found healthy.A villager spotted the injured bird lying near a tree and alerted the forest department. Cobra team member Sukhdev Bhatt said the bird was rescued and shifted to the govt veterinary hospital in Ajmer before being referred to Jaipur.Veterinarian Neetu Arora said the bird had suffered injuries and was breathing very slowly. “We administered the required treatment, but considering its condition, referred it to a hospital in Jaipur,” she said.“The bird was identified as a Himalayan griffon vulture, a rare species found mainly in the Himalayas, Nepal and adjoining regions,” said forest range officer Teekam Chand Meena. It is among the world’s largest raptors, with a wingspan of up to 10 feet and weighing around 12kg to 15kg.Forest officials said the Himalayan griffon’s presence in the plains is unusual and warrants further study, though similar rescues were also reported from parts of Uttar Pradesh.
