Chennaiyin FC in pole position to sign Brison | Goa News
Panaji: Brison Fernandes has verbally agreed terms with Chennaiyin FC and is expected to sign a two-year contract with the former Indian Super League (ISL) champions. The FC Goa winger has been a favourite of the Goan crowd since breaking into the first team in 2021 and scored an impressive goal against Saudi giants Al-Nassr FC in the AFC Champions League Two clash at Fatorda last season. At the end of his new three-year contract, Brison was contacted by several clubs, including former champions Mohun Bagan SG. But, according to sources, the winger has opted for Chennaiyin, where he will reunite with Clifford Miranda, who managed him during his time as coach of Goa reserves.“Papers have not been signed but there’s a verbal agreement between the player and club,” a source who is privy to the negotiations but not authorised to speak to the media told TOI on Thursday. “Coach Clifford spoke with Brison and convinced him that he has an important role to play at Chennaiyin.”Sources said Goa made multiple offers, each higher than the last one, but could not convince Brison, who has been with the club since he turned 15.Brison made his senior team debut in the ISL under Derrick Pereira and was handed chances by Carlos Pena too. In his first three years with Goa seniors, he managed just 328 minutes on the field. There were flashes of brilliances but rarely any consistency. All that appeared to change in Manolo Marquez’s second season at the club. He was so good that the experienced Spanish coach said he was the best young Indian player that he has managed. Brison made it to the national team and was voted ISL Emerging Player of the Year for 2024-25, thanks to his seven goals and two assists.“Brison is a typical Goan player who enjoys playing football,” Manolo said during one of his media interactions. “His professionalism is very good. He is scoring, and when you think his performance will go down in one moment, he delivers. He’s enjoying every minute on the field and this is very important. The character that he shows in training is very brave.”
