Vaiko loses temper at press meet

Chennai: MDMK general secretary Vaiko lost his temper at a press meet in Chengalpet when reporters asked him about his recent association with DMK of which he had again turned critical.Vaiko told reporters corruption was prevalent during DMK’s five-year tenure. “There was collection, corruption and commission everywhere in the (previous) DMK govt. In land registration, money was taken for every square foot of land,” he said.A reporter asked why he had not spoken out against these issues while being part of the DMK alliance till recently, and Vaiko responded, “How can one oppose while remaining in an alliance? It is against coalition ethics.”Then Vaiko turned furious and asked whether the reporter belonged to a media house supporting DMK, and refused to take further questions. When the reporter further pressed on the issue, Vaiko’s supporters and functionaries tried to attack the reporters. Policemen separated the supporters and the reporters.Vaiko has been highly critical about DMK ever since he announced his decision to quit the DMK alliance, at the MDMK general council meeitng on June 27. DMK organizational secretary R S Bharathi said Vaiko has never been trustworthy. “Vaiko was the one who said that he had promised Kalaignar (former CM M Karunanidhi) he would stand with Stalin and Udhayanidhi, now he has shown his true colours,” Bharathi said.Chennai Press Club condemned Vaiko for his behaviour. “Vaiko spoke in a disrespectful manner. When MDMK men came to towards the reporter (to attack him), Vaiko, instead of stopping them, aggravated the situation by asking them to remove the reporter from the press meet,” Chennai Press Club said in a statement.
