People’s ideology of ‘their country, their roads’ and so on has become so ingrained in their minds that dumping off garbage on the road or spitting while walking is ‘normal’. Sometimes, people end up carrying this ideology with them wherever they go, even outside the country.A clip going viral on social media has brought this debate about littering and accountability to the centre of the online arena, where the Indian image is already facing numerous attacks daily.In an incident that reportedly took place in Mission, British Columbia, a local resident Taylor Mailer said he witnessed three men disposing of an old couch in a forested area near his property.According to him, he initially saw the Indian men driving away at high speed and suspected they had dumped something off the bank.The video showed the three men pulling a large sofa out of the woods and loading it onto a truck that already had furniture on it. Mailer said he chased them down and made them come back to the site where they had dumped the sofa. Then, he asked them to dump it at a proper place.Once the men loaded the sofa, they drove to the Mission Sanitary Landfill, with Mailer following them. Later, in the clip, they were seen disposing of the sofas through proper channels.“Caught these guys dumping their garbage off the bank right outside our house. Chased them down and pulled them over. Made them come back and pick it up. Then made them take it to the dump,” the text over the video said. “Call it a lesson in being Canadian.”
