Rohini Hattangadi reveals the heartwarming thing Smita Patil told her during ‘Gandhi’ screen tests; ‘Smita Patil ka dil kaafi saaf tha’ | Hindi Movie News
Years after sharing screen space with some of Indian cinema’s finest talents, veteran actor Rohini Hattangadi revisited a memory that perfectly captured the kind of person Smita Patil was behind the spotlight. The incident dates back to the casting process of Richard Attenborough‘s acclaimed film ‘Gandhi’, where both actors found themselves competing for the same role.Long before they became celebrated performers, Rohini and Smita had crossed paths as students in Pune. Recalling those early years, Rohini remembered that their association predated their film careers. Talking to Money Control, the veteran actress shared, “If we look at Smita, she was in my school in Pune. I was a junior for two years,” The shared roots would later evolve into a professional relationship built on mutual respect.
Rohini Hattangadi competing for the same role as Smita Patil
During the casting of ‘Gandhi’, several actors were considered for the role of Kasturba Gandhi, including Smita Patil. Rohini recalled being part of the group that travelled to England for the auditions. “But for Gandhi’s screen test, Smita was one of the contestants,” She further explained how she, Naseeruddin Shah and Bhakti Barve had journeyed from India to participate in the selection process. “Yes, for Kasturba. When they met in England, I had gone from here. Myself, Nasir and Bhakti Barve, the three of us had gone from here.”According to Rohini, Smita arrived from another international assignment and initially had no idea who else had been shortlisted for the role. “She didn’t know who all had been called,” When she eventually discovered that Rohini was also being considered, her reaction left a lasting impression. “So when she got down and told them that Rohini has also come… very good. Something like this happened,” Rather than viewing the situation through the lens of competition, Smita reportedly welcomed the news with genuine warmth. The moment that stayed with Rohini over the years came after Smita’s interaction with Richard Attenborough. The veteran actor recalled how candidly Smita assessed the situation. “She said, Rohini. Her mind was so clear,” Smita then shared a thought that surprised Rohini. “I have met Richard. But Rohini, it’s you. I won’t be surprised if you are selected.”For Rohini, those words reflected an unusual sense of confidence and generosity, especially in an industry where opportunities often place colleagues in direct competition.
Remembering Smita Patil beyond her films
While Smita Patil is remembered for acclaimed performances in films such as ‘Bhumika’, ‘Manthan’, ‘Arth’, ‘Mirch Masala’ and ‘Namak Halaal’, Rohini believes her greatest quality lay in her nature.“Smita Patil ka dil kaafi saaf tha,”(Smita Patil had a very pure heart) the veteran actor said while reflecting on her late colleague. Decades later, it is memories like these that continue to define Smita Patil’s legacy, not just as an exceptional performer, but as someone whose kindness and sincerity left a mark on everyone who knew her.
